Red Balloon - Red Balloon of the Air
About Red Balloon - Red Balloon of the Air
Welcome to Red Balloon of the Air - the Red Balloon that provides severely bullied or anxious children who are unable to attend mainstream school with the opportunity to engage with education again, supported by an online community of friendly and understanding staff and students.
The aim of Red Balloon of the Air is the same as that of our Centres – to raise students' self-esteem, get them back on an academic track and help them move on with their lives.
The RBAir programme is delivered through an online learning environment with specialist teachers, a negotiated academic curriculum, personal and social education, access to the creative arts, collaborative projects, online counselling and plenty of opportunities for students to feel connected to a community. Students are initially taught in one-to-one sessions with the teacher or wellbeing mentor. When they are ready they may then join small groups for some subjects.
We believe at RBAir that the need for face-to-face human contact and support is integral to the recovery programme. Our Regional Mentors provide support for students and parents on the ground, helping them get to grips with the technology and also helping to organise trips that will help student recovery and build their confidence.
After running a pilot programme with a small group of students and staff. Since then RBAir team has expanded, gaining teachers in Maths, Humanities, and Modern Foreign Languages, and a new Deputy Co-ordinator to manage our expanded student and parent base. Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have seen many of our original cohort of students reintegrate into their local communities through college, school and clubs, a transformation which is always a source of pride for both families and RBAir staff. We look forward to further expansion in the coming year.
