Red Balloon – Cambridge celebrates ‘all souls’ day/ el dia de los muertos’
As part of Red Balloon’s curriculum students learn about cultures and traditions from around the world. This term staff organised activities based on ‘all souls’ day / el dia de los muertos’ (‘the day of the dead’) as celebrated in Mexico. First, students were given an introduction and overview of how the day is celebrated in different cultures, then each student was asked to chose a famous dead person to research, establishing what that person did and what they were like. The findings were then displayed on an ‘altar’. At the end of the exercise, teachers offered three activities: baking soul cakes/bread of the dead, making decorations for the ‘altar’ and a media workshop. The activities were great fun and very successful.
