“Rising Above Bullying” – launched on 24th March 2011
Written by Dr Carrie Herbert, founder and Chief Executive of Red Balloon Learner Centre Group, and children’s author Rosemary Hayes, "Rising Above Bullying' was launched at the Cambridge University Press’ bookshop in Cambridge on Thursday 24th March.
The event began with songs performed by students from Red Balloons - Cambridge and Norwich who have been working with Matt Greenwood of Voces Cantabiles since October. Members of Apollo 5, an acappella group, supported the children during their performance.
Andrew Gilfillan, Managing Director of CUP, welcomed guests to the book launch and Steven Jones, Commissioning Editor of Jessica Kingsley Publishers, said how this book would help to raise awareness of the devastating effects of bullying and celebrate the fact that Red Balloon has successfully recovered children so traumatised by bullying they are unable to attend school.
Rosemary Hayes, who had interviewed the children featured in the book, said how moved she had been by their stories and how she hoped the book would help children, parents, siblings and teachers understand the impact of bullying on young people.
Esther Rantzen, Patron of Red Balloon, made a plea for people who witnessed a bullying incident not to stand by or walk on but to intervene or offer support for the victims in some way.
